KAILESH PATEL
I am a third generation born and bred Kenyan of Indian heritage, my ancestors hailed from Gujarat in India and were pioneers in developing Kenya in early last century. My late grandfather was a founder director of Maida Limited which morphed into the present day Unga Limited, a wheat and maize milling giant of East Africa.
My early years were spent both in Nairobi and Nanyuki where I completed my secondary education. I moved to the UK in the mid seventies to complete my further education and subsequently joined the family business of construction and retail. I love living in London because of its cosmopolitan charm and diversity.
I am currently focussed on coordinating conservation and environmental rehabilitation fund raising and awareness campaigns in the UK in my capacity as a trustee of the Mount Kenya Trust based in Nanyuki Kenya. I continue to maintain a home and smallholding on the slopes of Kirinyaga (Mount Kenya) and spend a considerable amount of time out there assisting in tree planting activities on the mountain and raising the profile of our charity.
I am honoured to be a member of the Kenya Society because it gives me a great springboard to promote the vital work of my charity as well as enthuse fellow society members into ploughing back something vital in terms of skills development and educational opportunities and promotion through association and sharing of personal experiences.
I enjoy fine dining, sporting events such as motor rallying and adventure travelling to game sanctuaries across the globe seeking conservation ideas. I am married and have two grownup children.
